Slane (more popularly known as 'Be Thou My Vision') is a dramatic piece for middle school concert band set in motion by a driving, syncopated figure in the timpani which is soon joined by an equally syncopated, repeated figure in the F Horn/Trombone Baritone sections. The ensuing stately melodic themes are similarly characterized by driving accompaniment figures that build in rhythmic and harmonic tension. Every section in the band contributes to the growing melodic development throughout this piece.

In 2008, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to premiere Slane with Elliot Del Borgo conducting. We performed this piece for the 2008 South Central District Band in North Carolina, and I had a fantastic experience. I was in 8th grade at the time, and Del Borgo's artistry inspired me to begin composing music of my own. The process of preparing this was really neat as he was making edits and changing things up a little bit as we were rehearsing. This piece is incredibly fun to play and everyone has interesting parts. It is slightly more challenging than it looks, but it is well worth the effort. More people should program this great work!
