    Program Notes
A Seaside Elegy was written for Carl Hungerford, one of the founding members of the Hamilton County Community Band in Noblesville, IN. It is a tone poem about the things he loved doing most: music making and learning. A note from his beloved wife, Susan, helped me craft the work:

“Carl loved photography ... especially of birds everywhere, and the gorgeous flowers at The Huntington Gardens. He also loved his telescopes, which he used to take photos of various planets. And, he also loved Seal Beach, CA, which is a small community with a quiet beach, where he could fly the beautiful kites he did that were competition level.”

Being primarily a percussionist, I chose to mark the beginning and end of the piece with his chosen instrument, snare drum, starting and ending with the sounds of waves he loved so much. I envisioned many of the scenes depicted by his wife in writing this work. From everything I knew about Carl he was a modern-day renaissance man - a musician, an engineer, a photographer and even a wood worker. This work is for him.
