Program Notes
Rise the Sun is a minor jazz waltz inspired by and composed for Joey Stempien. The main melody is set to a repeating four-bar modal harmonic progression while the bridge uses more traditional II-V jazz harmonies. Intricate ensemble interplay is a key element of this chart, requiring each instrument section to be independent while listening for its own proper place in the blend. Chord changes are provided for skilled improvisers, as well as an optional written tenor sax solo.
