Written for low-A marimba & optional electronic track, Relinquished is a musical interpretation of the popular story of Jonah. In the story Jonah flees from what he has been told to do and finds himself on a ship in the midst of a storm of unprecedented severity. Jonah then relinquished himself to the crew after informing them that he is the reason for the storms. Jonah is cast overboard and swallowed by a “great fish” where he spends three days and nights praying for deliverance.

Percussive Notes New Literature Review
“Relinquished” is an interpretation of the story of Jonah. The electronic track utilizes a combination of aquatic sounds, ambient pads, and modern electronic percussion sounds. No click track is included, as all tempo information needed by the player is provided by the electronic playback.
Technically, the marimba part is accessible, and would work well for a younger player. The option of performing with the track allows a flexibility for performance; students who may not have access to the equipment necessary for stereo playback may be able to perform the work. The composer has provided sticking suggestions at points, which will aid younger players in making informed and logical sticking decisions on four-mallet marimba.
“Relinquished” would be a good piece for any high school director to have on the shelf.
