Program Notes
Commissioned by Justin Schramm and Prior Lake High School for their performance at the 2024 Midwest Clinic, Primordial Awakening is an exploration of the universe’s earliest moments, from the explosive birth of the cosmos to the quiet, gradual emergence of structure and order. Scored for a 15-member ensemble with the option to add further players, this piece evokes the tumultuous yet wondrous journey of cosmic formation.
At its heart is an 8-note sequence, representing the fundamental laws of physics baked into the universe. This sequence weaves through the composition, symbolizing the guiding principles that direct the universe’s path.
The work begins with raw energy, imitating the Big Bang’s initial eruption. Gradually, as the piece unfolds, textures shift and sounds become more organized, with rhythms and motifs coalescing into complex structures that mirror the formation of stars, galaxies, and planets. What once seemed formless takes on purpose and harmony, reflecting the universe’s ongoing dance from disorder to intricate design.
