Program Notes
OnRush is a completely electronic piece for MIDI controllers and Apple’s MainStage software, commissioned by Tahlequah Kirk and the Granbury HS percussion ensemble for their performance at the 2019 Percussive Arts Society International Convention IPEC showcase concert. OnRush borrows heavily from the Electronic Dance Music genre but is performed note-by-note by live performers through traditional notation.
With many music programs moving online over the past two years, and schools moving away from traditional instrument music programs, there is a need for more electronic music-making options. “OnRush (for MIDI Controllers and MainStage)” would certainly be a fun project for young electronic music students looking to bridge the gap between electronic music programs and traditional playing.
The music sounds like electronic dance music and would be a fun percussion ensemble alternative for high school or advanced middle school players. The score comes with a setup guide and concert file, so no programming is needed on the part of the director. The parts use traditional notation and are the standard eight hand sixteenth-note patterns of an intermediate percussion ensemble.
“OnRush” may not be doable for every ensemble due to the specific equipment needs, but for programs with the electronic instrument inventory, this piece would be a good project to give the students a taste of programming and using MIDI instruments while building their traditional playing and performing skills.
