    Program Notes
A Musical Memory was composed in 2018 to honor the memory and spirit of Nicole T. Lear. Ms. Lear taught at Robert Frost Sixth Grade Academy in the Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, KY for her entire career. As a music teacher, she brought out the best in her students, as her enthusiasm for life was an inspiration for all. A Musical Memory is an uplifting and energetic piece for young musicians which is meant to celebrate Nicole’s life. Ms. Lear’s greatest joy was her love for her Lord, her family, and friends. The piece was named by Nicole’s two children Madison (9) and Jaden (7). Her daughter added, “We named it ‘A Musical Memory’ because my mom gave me musical talent and because I am going to keep my mom’s flute and learn to play it so I’ll always have her in my memory.” This piece highlights the instrument Nicole played and includes a flute solo in the middle of the work. The contrasting sections show the pure love of life and embrace the boundless enthusiasm and passion that all of her colleagues, friends, and family remember.

The District 12 Music Educators of Louisville, KY commissioned Noah Taylor to write this piece in honor of their beloved colleague. Nicole passed away suddenly of a brain aneurysm at age 37 with much more to offer the musical world. She was a beloved mother, daughter, sister, and colleague. Her colleagues thought an original piece for middle school band would be a way to continue her legacy of inspiring young musicians.
