Program Notes
Set against a primarily minor jazz harmonic progressions, Minor Plot is an entertaining and challenging work for this ideal combination of tenor pan and marimba (low A). The marimba part requires intermediate 4-mallet technique throughout and the pan part is written for a low C instrument. The majority of the piece is set in 4/4 time and alternates between the original minor material and a contrasting major tune. The mid-section of the work shifts briefly to 3/4 time and incorporates the minor melodic and harmonic material in both 3/4 and 6/8 feels. One section of the piece is open for optional improvisation in the tenor pan part with chord changes, written notes, and cued optional notes provided.
