Program Notes
Megastructure is inspired by enormous architecture, such as the Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur, the Vessel, the Oculus, and the One World Trade Center in New York. Each of these massive works of art are truly breathtaking. Even more awe-inspiring are the stories behind the structures.
Merdeka 118 represents Malaysia’s journey to independence.
The Vessel is meant to stand out like a “12-month Christmas tree” and captures designer Thomas Heatherwick’s childhood fascination with “an old, discarded flight of wooden stairs outside a local building site.”
The Oculus and the One World Trade Center fill a void left behind following the attacks on the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001.
