Composed for the CAn-Duo percussion duo, Machina No. 1 is a challenging multiple percussion duo that combines traditional notation with sections of performer improvisation. This challenging work showcases lyricism, powerful grooves, performer creativity, and rhythmic phasing.

Instrumentation
Player 1: Glockenspiel or Tuned Pipes (D4, F4, G4, A4, B-flat 4, C5, D5, F5, G5), med. hard glock mallets, soft yarn mallets, and drumsticks.
Player 2: Vibraphone or Tuned Pipes (C4, D4, F4, G4, A4, B-flat 4, C5, D5, F5, G5), two pairs of hard vibe mallets, drumsticks, and hard glock mallets.
Shared Instruments: Bass Drum (laid flat), Desk Bells or Crotales (D4, F4, G4, A4, B-flat 4). The flat bass drum should be between the two players. Place the desk bells or crotales on a small towel laid across the middle of the head. If using crotales, it is advisable to use a wooden board with nails or rods that the crotales can be securely placed on.
