Program Notes
Lunar is a ten-movement marimba quartet based on the various cycles of the moon, with each movement representing a particular phase. The phases and movements are listed as: New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Partial Eclipse, Full Moon, Waning Crescent, Third Quarter, Waning Gibbous, and Total Eclipse. Each of the movement’s tonalities, meters, and rhythms are serialized forms of the spelling of the phases. Additionally, this spelling creates several motifs that can be found from movement to movement. Examples of this can be seen in the like-named movements (i.e., New Moon and Full Moon). While some Movements are scored for multiple 5.0-octave instruments, octave substitution is completely acceptable where necessary.
