Program Notes
King Swing is a hard swingin’ minor tune hearkening back to the 1930s and the likes of Louis Prima and Benny Goodman. After an explosive opening, the trombones tiptoe in with the main melody, supported by muted trumpet backgrounds. The saxes then present the melody in unison, giving way to a big brass-led bridge in major before the saxes restate the melody in full harmony. A long solo feature for the trumpet begins with a composed duet with the drums before opening up for improvisation (or continuing with a composed solo). The rhythm section drops out as the ‘bones begin a layered buildup to the return of the opening figure and main melody.
