Program Notes
In Her Footsteps opens with resounding fanfare-like fragments, symbolizing the enduring power of Barbara Buehlman's influence. These fragments gradually coalesce into a full-bodied statement, embodying the strength and impact of her legacy. The piece then evolves into a lamenting ballad, where an augmented rendition of the original theme emerges, resonating through in the low brass and reeds. As the ballad progresses, the fanfare resurfaces with commanding authority, symbolizing Buehlman's unwavering dedication to her craft. Finally, the work culminates with a triumphant return to the fanfare fragments, echoing the enduring inspiration left in Barbara Buehlman's footsteps. Composed for the Barbara Buehlman Composition Competition for the Midwest Clinic in 2021, this work is built upon a musical cell derived from the letters of her name, ensuring a deeply personal and poignant musical journey for performers and audiences alike.
