Illuminations explores a very traditional melodic structure against two modern concepts: 21st century tonal harmony (Mvt. 1) and modern rhythmic counterpoint (Mvt. 2). The piece as a whole depicts an interpretation of the idea of “pure music”, meaning music that is detached from external concepts or inspirations that are not music itself.

Program Notes
Commissioned for the 60th Anniversary of the Brass Arts Quintet at Tennessee Tech University, Illuminations explores a very traditional melodic structure against two modern concepts: 21st century tonal harmony (movement 1) and modern rhythmic counterpoint (movement 2). The piece as a whole depicts an interpretation of the idea of “pure music”, meaning music that is detached from external concepts or inspirations that are not music itself. The title for the piece was my own impression from hearing the completed work for the first time: a perception of a bright soundscape communicating many emotions.
