Bruno de Menezes (1893-1963) is from my hometown: Belém, Brazil. This short poem is from one of his most important books, Batuque, celebrating African traditions in the Amazon region. Fartura means abundance. I studied piano with the poet’s daughter when I was six or seven years old. Almost thirty years later, I told her I was writing a composition using this particular poem and she told me that her father wanted to give thanks for the kindness of the earth, which provides the poor with nourishment that simply falls from the trees. Belém is known as the “City of Mangos;” cover your heads!

Instrument key and an IPA pronunciation guide are provided to aid in learning & performance.
