Program Notes
Fanfare, Lament, Finale was inspired by a conversation with Paula Crider, a former band director at the University of Texas at Austin. In the course of a discussion about the current state of band repertoire, Ms. Crider pointed out that there are very few fanfares available to use as concert openers, especially for high school honor bands -- that is, aside from Jack Stamp's repertoire -- and that I should consider making a contribution to this area. I took her advice. Once the fanfare was finished, I decided it would be fun to develop the two most prominent features of the fanfare as the basis of two additional movements. The result is a suite in which the first movement may be detached and played as a concert opener by itself, or the whole piece can be performed as a unit.
