Program Notes
Dark Dances is a piece of music used to develop a sense of syncopation and rhythm within the band. As I wrote it, I imagined a story in which you find yourself lost, stumbling through the woods trying to find the direction home. You come upon a group of people dancing around a fire. They are joyous and fun and immediately welcome you to their group. However, something feels off. You never quite discover what it is, but you know you have to get out of there, and fast! So you run, and they come after you, dead set on keeping you as a part of their group. You struggle, you trip, you fall, but you keep running until you make it out of the woods safely.
