Program Notes
A traditional combination lock is a type of mechanical locking device in which a sequence of numbers, letters or symbols are used to open the lock, revealing what was meant to be kept safe or secret.
The earliest known combination lock was discovered in Athens, Greece from a Roman tomb, and was attached to a small box. Very special items are kept safely locked up with combination locks, whether they are expensive, personal, or confidential.
This marimba quartet with drums, uses a sequence of notes that are played in a way, allowing each note to be the start of the combination or code, almost like trying every combination to open the lock.
