Boxout (Cajón Duet)

On of the first pieces of its kind, Boxout is a high-energy piece written for only two cajóns. Using nontraditional ways to play the instrument, this groove-heavy piece is fun to perform and a crowd-pleaser!

Program Notes

Boxout was created from ideas that stemmed while playing cajón as a street performer in Gatlinburg, TN. The cajón is known as a support instrument, used mostly as an alternative for drum set. Between the rich history and diversity of the cajón, it inspired me to explore what music could be made with it as a solo instrument, or in this case, a duet. The opening four-note motif is the basis of the composition, first appearing in 4/4 time, and then later in 3/4 and 12/8. Boxout
