Bounce

Infused with the sounds of Bernstein, Gershwin, and a brief nod to Dizzy Gillespie, Bounce features the trumpet as both a classical and a jazz instrument, offering moments of blazing virtuosity and flexible improvisation. Written-out solos are also provided if the soloist is uncomfortable improvising.

Program Notes
Commissioned by the West Forsyth High School Band (Jim Kirkpatrick & Phil Spencer, directors) and a consortium of North Carolina high school band programs, Bounce was written to feature the talents of NYC jazz trumpeter (and NC native) Mike Sailors. It received its world premiere at the NC Music Educator's In-Service Conference in Winston-Salem in November 2014.

In addition to the wind ensemble, only a rhythm section (piano, bass, drums) is necessary. However, jazz combo lead sheets are provided to give more players the opportunity to expand the improvisation sections.
