Written to celebrate the life of high school band director Gary Ciulla, Beyond Measure is based on the three-note motif, A-C-E, which is not only a minor triad, but also the top part of a major seventh chord. Gary’s nickname was "Ace", and so these three notes were used to build the thematic material of the piece, either in original pitches or transposed. All themes allude to his persona and musical accomplishment. His positive influence on countless students, faculty, and friends is truly “beyond measure.”
