The Artist Within was written to depict the journey of an artist from the struggles of the beginning artist to the joy and wonder of an advanced performance. This work begins with a mysterious opening that leads to a glorious, rhythmic melody. Sweeping melodic lines, rhythmic punctuation and modern harmonies combine to create a lush, movie score-like feel that all students and conductors will enjoy.

The Artist Within was commissioned by the Detroit Country Day School bands, Jonathan J. Napper and Alan J. Oliphant directors, for the grand finale of their annual day Celebrate the Arts.
