Originally composed for 6-part mixed choir, Josef Rheinberger's popular Abendlied (Evening Song) has been masterfully scored for string orchestra by Leonard Ingrande, featuring phrasing with combined legato and détaché techniques. Imitative voices traded between instruments invite each section to articulate their entrances, thus keeping the forward motion alive.

Program Notes
Josef Rheinberger's popular choral work Abendlied (Evening Song), now scored for string orchestra, features phrasing with combined legato and détaché techniques. Furthermore, the slow tempo and long phrases require a thoughtful and well-controlled use of the bow. Imitative voices traded between instruments invite each section to articulate their entrances thus keeping the forward motion alive. Finally, although the dynamics remain mostly in the moderate range, there are moments of more extreme dynamics (especially at the end) with crescendo and diminuendo markings throughout which are crucial for bringing out the expressive and poetic nature of the piece.
