In February 2023, a great songwriter and composer left us. Burt Bacharach arguably wrote more memorable melodies in the 20th century than any other composer. He had a style that was instantly recognizable – sublimely shaped melodic lines laden with unusual harmonic progressions, rhythmic surprises, and irregular phrase lengths. The fact that a writer of limitless freshness and sophistication could communicate on such a universal level pays tribute to his genius. He has been a constant source of inspiration to me throughout my composing life, and in this short piece I have tried to emulate what I admire about his work.
