5 x 5 is a dramatic and high-energy solo for multi-percussion that features variable instrumentation and primal vocal calls with interwoven sections of tense emotion and driving grooves. The medium length and difficulty of the piece, combined with its mobility, make it perfect for any event, be it recital, gig, concert hall, or street performance and the variable instrumentation offers every performer the chance to have a unique performance.

Program Notes
5 x 5 was commissioned by my teacher and friend Dr. Ryan M. Smith. He gave the simple request for me to write a multi-percussion solo that lasted around 5 minutes. I decided to use the number 5 not just for duration, but also for instrumentation, tempo, thematic material, and phrasings. The number 5 is represented overtly throughout the piece, but is also hidden in smaller details for the performer to discover. I’ve also included vocal syllables inspired by my youth and a “choice instrument” inspired by my love for John Cage.
