Program Notes
Three Situations is a work for B-flat clarinet and tenor pan in three movements. The first movement, Sunset, Sunrise, primarily utilizes open sonorities and metric acceleration, with pan and clarinet performing similar ideas that overlap and converse. I Should Have Known Better (Fill-In-The Blank) is written for four mallet steel pan, and opens with a rising quintuplet figure that appears in several forms throughout the movement. The listener is encouraged to use their imagination to fill in the blanks. Children, Tag, Street, "Car!" was the first movement composed for this piece. The opening figure returns multiple times, the last of which is in the original key. This piece was written for clarinetist Dr. Lisa Kachouee, and premiered by Duo Rodinia.
