Musically, Strands was inspired by trends in fiction throughout a variety of artistic disciplines to explore the concept of parallel worlds and dimensions. Strands attempts to change a single musical idea through dimensional shifts, allowing a single emotive gesture to cross into other worlds and change with context. The use of microtonality or “quarter tones” provokes a slightly uncomfortable response by natural consequence of their difficulty to produce clearly.

Program Notes
A collaboration with clarinetist Olivia Meadows, Strands was born as an exploration of two concepts simultaneously. On the technical side this piece is intended to be a less tonally difficult introduction to contemporary literature for clarinet.

The use of microtonality or “quarter tones” in this piece should provoke a slightly uncomfortable response by natural consequence of their difficulty to produce clearly. The resulting effect of the entire work should allow the audience to peer into a different world from a distance, experience unfamiliar feelings and finally return home to a comfortable place.
