The IGNITE Series for the Developing Percussion Ensemble
This unique series was designed specifically for young percussionists as they experience the magic of playing in a percussion ensemble. Each piece provides the director and students with great flexibility – from the number of players to the tempo to the instrumentation.

“Imminent Launch” is part of C. Alan Publications’ “Ignite Series,” with a focus on flexible instrumentation for younger percussionists. The work may be performed with five players, as an optional marimba part is always doubled elsewhere within the ensemble (save for one rolled phrase where this part harmonizes with the other marimba part), or with additional players doubling parts.
The form of the piece is clear, with an opportunity to introduce or reinforce the concept of a “roadmap” within a piece of music by way of the dal segno and coda. The work is primarily in 4/4, though there is a 5/4 phrase. The rhythmic content in 5/4 is consistent each time it appears, allowing younger students to solidify their understanding of counting in 5/4 without having to process multiple rhythmic presentations.
This work is enjoyable to listen to, idiomatic for the instruments and age group, and an appropriate length. It would be a worthy addition to any beginning percussion ensemble’s library.
