Program Notes
This work was written to commemorate two significant events in the lives of Jerriald Dillard and his wife, Jennifer Dillard, Director of Bands at Knox Junior High School in The Woodlands, Texas: first, the birth of their beautiful daughter, Elizabeth Lee Dillard, and second, the selection of Mr. Dillard’s ensemble to perform at the prestigious Midwest Clinic in Chicago. At the Dillards’ request, the work is simple and melodic in nature. The music should flow gently and always remain fluid and transparent. The melody is predominantly pentatonic, harmonized mostly in E-flat minor.
We just starting rehearsing this piece in our high school percussion ensemble. The students are already in love! It's also handy that an optional marimba part is included which covers the cello part if the a cellist isn't available, or if you simply want to double the part to help the cellist out with pitch. ;)
We look forward to programming this during the festival season! Christopher Nelson on Nov 22nd 2017
