Scored for a balanced ensemble (4 keyboard & 4 battery), Deck Park Tunnel utilizes passages both in the major and minor modes, and shifts frequently between a 3/4 and 6/8 time signature (the same measure value, but with a clearly different feel). A work with driving energy throughout, but one that also captures the spirit of recreation and play, Deck Park Tunnel is an engaging, creative, and pedagogical work that is ideal for intermediate percussion ensembles.

    Program Notes
The Deck Park Tunnel in downtown Phoenix, AZ was the final constructed mile of the I-10 freeway, completing the connection from Jacksonville Beach, FL to Santa Monica, CA. Situated on top of a series of 19 underpasses (or decks) you will find a profound contrast to the steel, concrete, and asphalt below in the form of a large, grassy, and tree-lined 30-acre park. In this percussion ensemble work, I have tried to exploit similar contrasts to this creative compromise that facilitates the passage of approximately 250,000 cars each day while also providing a venue for family picnics, outdoor concerts, and farmer’s markets. Deck Park Tunnel is scored for a balanced ensemble – four players on keyboard percussion instruments and four players on timpani, drums, and non-pitched percussion. The piece utilizes the same key signature throughout, but shifts between passages clearly in minor, those clearly in major, and others that are relatively ambiguous. The tempo remains constant throughout, but the meter shifts frequently, most notably between a 3/4 and 6/8 time signature – the same measure value, but with a clearly different feel. A work with driving energy throughout, but one that also captures the spirit of recreation and play, Deck Park Tunnel is an engaging, creative, and pedagogical work that is ideal for intermediate percussion ensembles.
